Happy Early Father’s Day From Prospector Ranch!

~ Natalia Radcliffe ~

Did you know that back in the 1920s and 1930s people wanted Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to be one holiday called Parent’s Day? However, ironically, due to the Great Depression, the movement didn’t stick, as companies and advertisers promoted the holiday, desperate to pull themselves out of a financial rut and make more money to stay in business. Items such as ties, hats, sporting goods, and greeting cards, among others, were marketed. With World War II following the Great Depression, Father’s Day was advanced as a holiday to help support American troops and the war effort. Years later, in 1972, Richard Nixon finally signed a proclamation making it an official federal holiday, and it has been that way ever since, having now over 50 years under its belt.

In my family, Father’s Day has always been a great excuse to spend time with my father or grandfather. Sometimes you don’t realize how often you tell your dad how much you love or appreciate him, so I’m grateful for the holiday that gives me an opportunity to sit back from the busyness of day-to-day life and focus on what’s important to me: family. As a child, your father can seem like such a larger-than-life presence, and it’s often not until you reach adulthood yourself that you realize he is simply human like everyone else. Father’s Day is a time that you can give back to someone who has done so much for you. I’ll always associate Father’s Day with the outdoors, taking leisurely hikes through nature, coupled with long, thoughtful conversations that my dad and I don’t always have an opportunity for on an average day. It is surreal to think that the holiday is barely half a decade old, yet I can’t imagine anything different.

As Father’s Day approaches this month, we at Prospector Ranch hope that you have a wonderful time with your fathers, grandfathers, or father figures. If your loved one enjoys hiking as much as my dad, we are located near many trails, and since we are closer to the ocean, temperatures are usually cooler and more temperate. As we’re going into summer, this can make for a nicer, more enjoyable outdoor adventure. We have a vintage 1972 Airstream, a Conestoga Covered Wagon, or a comfortable rustic Safari tent if you are looking to make Father’s Day into a Father’s Weekend.
