Daylight Savings Time Begins!
~ Natalia Radcliffe ~
It’s that time of year again. You wake up, look at the time, panic, and in the next moment realize you have yet to update your clocks, moving them forward one hour.
Daylight Savings Time begins!
Did you know its roots were centered around an effort to save electricity?
It is theorized that Benjamin Franklin first mentioned the concept in 1784 in a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris, but it wasn’t until World War I that it was actually applied. During that time, many countries, such as Britain and Germany, used Daylight Savings Time in an effort to save energy on people using methods of artificial lighting, so that fuel could instead be used for the troops. It wasn’t a national practice until 1966, when the Uniform Time Act was passed. For years until 2007, the United States observed Daylight Savings Time from the first Sunday of April to the last Sunday of October, at which time then President George W. Bush extended it four extra weeks.

However, each state is not mandated to observe Daylight Savings Time. For example, Arizona, where owner Meggan runs an Airbnb, does not observe the practice. That means, currently, there is an hour difference between us here in California and Arizona! Keep that in mind if you ever decide to stop by the state and stay in our Airbnb there.
The opinions centering around Daylight Savings time vary. Some say that an extra hour of daylight in the evenings can help decrease the number of robberies and can contribute to overall better mental health, as the extra sunlight can help with boosting one’s mood. Other opinions say that losing an hour of sleep can cause more car accidents, and makes it harder for those who need to get up early in the morning to get things accomplished, having to deal with an extra hour of darkness before the sun rises.

Regardless, it is still here, and an annual tradition many in the U.S. observe.
If you enjoy the longer daylight hours in the evening, our three Airbnbs on our property on Prospector Ranch are close to many outdoor activities, such as hiking (check out this blog for ideas) and beaches (check out this blog about dog friendly beaches near us and this blog about beaches in Malibu near us for ideas). If you’re in Southern California looking for a short weekend getaway, you have the opportunity to experience the many outdoor adventures Southern California has to offer, all while knowing that once you have enjoyed watching the sun set, you can have a short drive back to your Airbnb to spend the night, instead of braving the traffic to get back home. If this sounds like something up your alley, come check us out! We look forward to meeting you.
